Aries

The tale of Aries, Born at the Edge of Spring

Ram with the Golden Fleece

Long ago, in the space between winter’s last wind and springs first bloom, the earth stirred with new life. Buds trembled on trees, lambs bleated under golden skies, and the wheel of the year turned once more. At this sacred turning, this moment called the Spring Equinox, the Sun entered the constellation of Aries, and so the zodiac year began.

But Aries is no gentle spring breeze. It is the Ram, bold, wild, burning with the same fire Prometheus gifted to humankind. It is a creature of action, of courage, of instinct. It is the first spark, the sacred beginning. And like all great things Aries has a myth…

The Ram with the Golden Fleece

Once upon a time in a kingdom ruled by pride and cruelty, two royal children, Phrixus and Helle, were haunted by a jealous stepmother that was plotting to kill them. Their true mother, a nymph, prayed for their protection, and the gods hearing her plea, sent a magical ram, a beast with wings and a fleece spun from sunlight.

This was Aries, not merely an animal, but a divine spirit of protection, bravery, and flight. The Ram swept the children away on his back, soaring above the land and sea. But tragedy struck and Helle fell, swallowed by the sea that now bears her name – Hellespont, a narrow straight lying between Europe and Asia. Phrixus survived the journey, carried safely to Colchis, what is now western Georgia.

In gratitude Phrixus sacrificed the lamb to Zeus, and its Golden Fleece was hung high in the sacred grove of Mars, glowing like a symbol of pure, selfless courage. The Golden Fleece symbolizes the higher self, the soul’s potential, and the light we are each destined to reclaim. The Rams spirits rose to the heavens, where it still lives among the stars as the constellation Aries. The first sign of the zodiac and guardian of new beginnings.

To be born under the sign of Aries is to carry the spark of this divine Ram within you. Aries is ruled by Mars, the god of war, movement, and raw force. Not war for conquest, but war for purpose, for action, for awakening. Mars ignites our blood, fuels our courage, and drives us toward the unknown. So, when the Sun crosses into Aries at the spring equinox, it’s not only a season that awakens, but it is also our inner fire. Our desire to leap, begin, and act. Aries is not afraid to go first, it blazes a trail that others will follow. We each have a Golden Fleece within us – something sacred, shining, and just out of reach. Aries teaches us we won’t find it by waiting, we must leap towards it, horns forward and heart blazing with passion.

To be born under this sign means you carry the fire of first breath – the courage to leap before certainty; to begin before permission, and to burn trails where none yet exist.

you are the spark that dares the world to wake.

Aries is a mid-sized constellation and contains the fixed star Hamal at 7-degrees Taurus. Hamal is a star of leadership, boldness, and willpower.

“Its name means “Lamb.”
